1. Let Ss read the sentences below. Explain some main sentences for the Ss. Make sure they know what to do.
2. Play the recording for the Ss to circle the correct words in the brackets.
1) A man saw Yu Gong and his (children / family) when they were working on moving the mountains.
2) He told Yu Gong he could never do it because he was old and (poor / weak).

bit n. 有點;稍微
a little bit (= a little) + 形容詞或副詞或比較級時,表示“一點兒”
e.g. I’m a little bit tired. Let’s take a short rest.

辨析: a bit of + 不可數(shù)名詞 “一點……”
e.g. She poured a bit of salt water in her mouth.

silly adj. 愚蠢的
通常指由于缺乏常識、判斷力或穩(wěn)健而作出令人可笑的行為和舉止, 在句中可用作定語或表語。
e.g. I was silly to get out with a coat in a cold day.
在這樣冷的天氣里沒有穿外套就出門,我真傻。
(3) But what could Yu Gong do instead of moving the mountains?
instead of 是復合介詞,后接名詞、代詞、動詞的-ing形式或介詞短語等,意為“代替,作為……的替換”。

instead與instead of 只有一詞之差,但在用法上區(qū)別很大。instead是副詞,意為“代替”,在句中只能用作狀語。

1. unless是連詞,意為“除非;如果不”,引導條件狀語從句,含有否定意義,相
當于if ... not 。
注意:unless引導條件狀語從句時,如果主句是一般將來時,從句用一般現(xiàn)在時
表將來。如:
We’ll go to the concert unless it doesn’t rain.
2. as soon as是連詞詞組,引導時間狀語從句,意為“一……就……”。
as soon as引導的時間狀語從句中,若主句是一般將來時,從句用一般現(xiàn)在時表將來。如:
My brother will look for a job as soon as he leaves school.
3. so ... that表示“如此……以至于……”,常用于引導結果狀語從句。常見結構為:“so +形容詞/副詞+ that從句”或“so +形容詞+ a / an +單數(shù)名詞+ that從句”。如:
He was so excited that he couldn’t say a word.

作及物動詞時,后面必須跟賓語。常見錯誤表達方式:與某人結婚 marry with sb.
e.g. He is going to marry Jane in May. 他將于五月與簡結婚。

e.g. My aunt got married to a lawyer last year. 去年我的姑姑嫁給了一位法官。
8. fall in love 愛上;喜歡上
e.g. They fell in love at first sight. 他們一見鐘情。

1. Tell Ss to read the sentences in 4a and try to fill in the blanks with unless, as soon as, so…that.
2. 方法指導:首先,先閱讀所給的詞組,明確每個詞組的意思。 其次,通讀全句,理解大意;然后,根據(jù)句意及句子中上下文意的提示來確定空格處的意思。

as soon as; 點撥:分析句子結構可知,后一句“繼姐讓她做所有的家務”是主句,上一句“她的父親死后”應是句子的時間狀語。因此,應用as soon as 來引導時間狀語從句。 as soon as 意為“一……就”,時態(tài)遵循“主將從現(xiàn);主過從過”的原則。
2. She was ____ busy _____ she had no time to make a dress for the party.
so that; 點撥:分析句意可知“忙”所導致的結果是“沒有時間為聚會做一件禮服”。
so… that… 意為“如此……以至于”,常用于結果狀語從句,表示上文動作所產生的結果,故空格處應用so…that。前后句時態(tài),要保持一致。

unless; 點撥:句意“公主知道,除非他們幫她做一件禮服,她就會不能去參加那個晚會?!笨芍耙痪涫呛笠痪涞臈l件。

1. One year, the weather was so dry that no food would grow. 有一年,天氣太干旱了,以至于糧食顆粒不長。
so… that…是一個常見的句式結構,表示“如此……以至于……”, 副詞so之后
接形容詞或副詞,that引導一個完整的句子,有時that還可省略。例如本單元
的這個句子:That bird’s song is so beautiful that we would follow it.
2. We thought you were never coming back. 我以為你們再也回不來了。
We thought…表示人們過去的某種想法,判斷等,可以譯作“我們原想……; 我們本以為……”。如:I thought he would come, but he didn’t.
3. It’s leading us to that wonderful house made of bread, cake and sugar.
它在把我們引向那座由面包,蛋糕和糖果做成的美妙小屋。
此句中made of bread, cake and sugar作定語,修飾名詞house, 形容詞wonderful也是house的定語。在英語中,大部分形容詞作定語修飾名詞時應前置,短語或句子作定語修飾名詞時則后置。如:the young people in the room 屋子里的年輕人
4. The wife told her husband that unless he left the children to die in the forest, the whole family would die.
妻子告訴丈夫,如果他不把孩子們扔到森林里讓他們自生自滅,整個家庭就會滅亡。
unless的意思是“如果不,若非,除非”,它引導的是一個條件狀語從句,相當于if…not。因此,上面的句子改寫為: …if he didn’t leave the children to die in the forest, the whole family would die.
5. As soon as the moon rises, we can follow them instead.
月亮一升起來,我們就可以順著它們走了。
as soon as 表示 “一……就……”,再如本單元的這個句子:As soon as you wake up, you must go to the forest with your father. 你們一醒來就必須和爸爸去森林里。
